Web Support FAQ

The College provides extensive web support for faculty and staff, including site building and hosting for eligible projects. The principal focus for web efforts is the main COE website, built with the Drupal content management system (CMS). We have also built and hosted sites for more than 20 of the College’s Centers and Initiatives, mostly in WordPress. The UW Marketing and Communications team also offers a simple turnkey WordPress solution with the UW Sites service.

I want to build my own site

We strongly encourage anyone in the College who is considering building a website to contact Paul Keyes. A short initial meeting can over the broad outlines of what to expect, and present you with a range of options for you site. Typically we will:

  • Assess your basic site needs
  • Discuss your options regarding site development, maintenance, hosting
  • Go over general best web practices
  • Discuss potential pitfalls to be aware of as you move through the planning process

The College hosts a number of sites for Centers and Initiatives, and has also worked frequently with outside vendors when the need has come up. We can help you decide which hosting solution is best for you.

Working with the COE website

The main College of Education website is built in Drupal. All College faculty should have site accounts. If you are active faculty/staff and do not see yourself in the College directory, please contact coe@uw.edu to set up an account and get yourself listed in the directory.

College/UW-supported WordPress sites

WordPress lets you easily create and edit pages.

The COE supports eligible units wishing to maintain a College-hosted site with a UW-branded WordPress theme.

All UWNetID accounts may also easily set up a branded WordPress site on the UW Sites network.

Choosing an outside vendor for your website

Many grants and other forms of funding include funds for web development. Even if you intend to go outside the College for web development, we strongly encourage you to discuss the process of building your site with our communications staff as a first step.
