Structure Your Course Site

Define your course site’s structure

Modules are the primary organizing principle in Canvas. Modules allow you to group and sequence related course materials, and they’re often set up by week and theme to match a course schedule (e.g. Week 3: Classical Theories of Learning). Important content areas (described in detail in the next section) include Pages, Files, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes, and these content areas may be added to Modules. Modules help students understand the intended order of activities and relationships among course materials, especially in a distance learning setting.

To add Modules, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Modules area from the left-hand course navigation menu.
  2. Click on the blue “+ Module” button.
  3. Type in the Module’s title.
  4. Click “Add Module.”
  5. Repeat the process until all planned modules are added.

To add content to empty Modules, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the module you are adding content to, and click on the “+” button to the right of the module title.
  2. Choose the type of content (i.e. Assignment, Quiz, File, Page, Discussion) you want to add to the module from the dropdown menu.
  3. Choose the specific content you want to add to the module.
  4. Click “Add item.”
