Data is one of our most important assets, and we need to be thoughtful and prepared to use it at its full potential within the existing safeguards and regulations. On these pages you will find some ideas and recommendations to consider at the time you prepare your research plan.
Given the diversity of research projects involving data collection/sharing, this framework outlines some items to consider and share to communicate IT’s needs and expectations for organizations within our University.

- Timeline: Project start and end dates, major milestones.
- People/Roles: Key contact people and their roles. More specifically, who are the IT institutional contacts who will be working in the project
- Data (anonymization, transfer, storage, analysis, sharing, archival)
- Governance: Data ownership, who controls access, are there any specific user groups.
- Risk analysis/Liability: What are the major risks from a data security/privacy issues? Are there any specific risks to be prevented?
- Emergency procedures: Contact persons, and reporting needs in case of service interruption, data loss, data breach. Are there any specific procedures in place?
- Outcomes, secondary use: Are there any procedures for secondary use of the information?
- Maintenance, long term needs. Once the project is finished, what are the data/system expectations. Are there any resource needs after the project is completed?
