Technology Center Launches New Online Guides and Tutorials

This winter the Technology Center launched a new area of our website.  This site is located under the menu How To Guides.  We currently have guides for the following topics and plan to grow this section of the website.

  • ECFS ePortfolio Resources
  • Canvas Resources for Faculty
  • Technical Tips for Effective Classroom Videotaping
  • Video Compression

Check it out the guides here:  CoE Technology Center Website

We welcome your feedback on the new site and are always looking for ways to improve how we communicate with faculty, staff and students. Feel free to send us an email with comments or suggestions (edhelp@uw.edu).

Great Response Rate to Website Redesign Survey

In March, the information technology and marketing teams asked for your help in redesigning the College’s web page and we were thrilled to get an incredible response.

A total of 88 people shared their feedback on potential designs for a new homepage, including 32 faculty (36 percent), 33 staff (37 percent), and 23 students (26 percent).

We are now using your input to guide further development of the new College homepage with four key goals in mind:

  • Ensure our design is aligned with the UW’s overall brand guidelines.
  • Emphasize telling the College’s story (through video, images, infographics, etc.).
  • Focus on our core audiences, in particular prospective students and other external groups.
  • Create a design that is responsive to different devices (i.e., desktops, tablets, phones) and accessible to users with disabilities.

We anticipate having a penultimate version of our new homepage ready to share in late spring, and are on track to launch the College’s redesigned website in late summer.

Thank you for participating in our redesign process!

Autumn Update From the Director of Technology

This summer was an exciting time in the College of Education Technology Center. In July we received Student Technology Fee funds to upgrade several spaces. Here is the short list of some of our improvements:

        • Installation of a 5 person collaboration station
        • 11 new iMac computers
        • Installation of an interactive projector and whiteboard in 424
        • Additional equipment added to our student checkout pool

We hosted three weeks of technology camps for youth. These programs were affiliated with the Robinson Center for Young Scholars and focused on providing technology enrichment opportunities for adolescents.

In July, I had the opportunity to be a panelist during a week-long Education Design Lab for our recent ELTEP graduates. Hosted by the INSPIRE project this was the first Education Design Lab for Seattle area teachers. During the workshop, teachers co-designed, tested, and refined learning experiences that use technology in a purposeful way.

In August, I met with many of our TEP coaches to introduce the recently adopted teacher candidate technology outcomes and discussed strategies for working with our teaching candidates around technology in the classroom.

This fall is shaping up to be a great one with lots of activity on several fronts.  Here are a few upcoming projects:

  • Continued work integrating TEP Technology Outcomes in our course work
  • Formation of a College-wide Data Security Risk Management Team
  • Develop a strategic plan for our various web-based college resources
  • Work with the Faculty Technology Task Force to develop a strategic plan
  • Teaching and Learning with Technology Showcase featuring CoE Faculty

Worth Sharing: Maintaining Boundaries in the Use of Technology

Technology has become an increasingly necessary tool in daily life. You use it to do business, manage money, communicate, and shop. But sometimes it can feel like technology is managing you rather than the other way around. This month’s UW CareLink tip sheet provides ideas on how to create boundaries around your devices.

How are we Doing?

This summer the CoE Technology Support Team launched a new technology support survey.  The survey can be found here or at the end of any helpdesk ticket. The technology support survey is focused on providing feedback related to how well we are responding to your needs.  Our ultimate goal is to provide excellent service that supports the teaching, learning, research, and business needs of the CoE community. Please help us by letting us know how we are doing.

New E-mail Based Helpdesk Ticket System Feature

Based on your feedback, Paul Hanisko has developed several new features for the CoE helpdesk ticket system. Now when you need technology support you can choose to submit a ticket through our established helpdesk page or you simply send an email to edhelp@uw.edu and it will generate a new helpdesk ticket for you.  If you choose to send an email to edhelp@uw.edu we ask you to include the who, what, where and how urgent information in the email so we can be sure to address your needs promptly.

Additionally, you can now respond directly to helpdesk ticket email from one of our staff. You no longer need to login to the ticket system webpage to respond to a staff member.
