Module 3: Assessment and Diagnostic Issues

Even though autism was first described in the 1940s, little was really known about the disorder until the 1990s. Even today, there is a great deal that researchers, scientists, and health care providers don’t know about autism. But there are things that we do know about autism. This fact sheet offers broad information about autism and answers some of the more common questions that parents and families often have about the disorder.

Please read this word document (ten things every child with autism wishes you knew) and use it as a guide for this assignment.

  • Create a new “ten things” list and identify the ten things you believe everyone should know about assessment specific to ASD.
  • Please think about:  what is assessment, what is the process, and why is it important.
  • Create a list that you would feel comfortable giving to colleagues or parents who are asking for more information.  In addition, think about resources for your list….if readers want more information where can they go?
  • For some parents hearing that their child needs an “assessment” is a traumatic experience and they don’t know what to expect.  Please think about this as you develop your “ten things.”  We also want to be careful and not overload people with too much information when they are not ready.

This should be a 3 to 4-page document written in friendly language (like the example).  Please avoid jargon.
