Two swindlers, emperor. (old minister, child, official)

Emperor loves clothes.

Two swindlers came into town saying they could wave great cloth. If you can't see it, it means you're stupid.

Emperor ordered clothes. Prime ministers and emperor couldn't see clothes. Town saw he wasn't wearing any cloths, but he kept walking in procession only in underclothes.

More detailed illustrations. Swindlers stayed in the tower.

Don't lie. If you can't do something, Don't say you can. Don't call people bad names. Beware of swindlers. Check to see if it’s true or not. Always tell the truth.

Characters in the story talked. Ministers gave emperor messages. Swindlers tricked the town to believe that they weaved beautiful cloth.

The Emperor's New Clothes (Andersen, 1949)

2 clever rascals, emperor, (old minister, child, officer)

Colored pencil, watercolor, realistic, black outlines wasn't detailed not in comic book style.

Emperor wanted beautiful clothes. Two swindlers came saying that if you can't see their cloth, you're stupid. They couldn't do the job, emperor ordered cloths. Old minister and officer and emperor pretended to see the clothes. Town saw he wasn't wearing clothes, but the emperor kept walking.

Different illustrator, more people, smaller book. Emperor had no clothes at the end except for his belt, socks, and shoes. More realistic illustrations - close up pictures, swindlers called rascals not swindlers. Didn't have trunks to hide money. Different clothes.

Put on your own clothes. Ones you can see. Don't trick people badly. Don't lie. Don't pretend you can see something if you can't. make sure you have clothes on. Don't get tricked into thinking you are stupid.

Rascals tricked emperor into thinking they weaved beautiful cloth. Face to face - talking emperor realized he was naked.

Emperor, Two false weavers.

Cartoonish, black outlines, unrealistic, crayons, watercolor.

Emperor wanted beautiful clothes. Two false weavers came to town saying that if you can't see the cloth, you are a fool. 20 bags of gold paid to make the cloth. Emperor ordered clothes and got measured. Prime Minister, general and emperor pretended to see clothes. People said stuff about cloth. Child noticed the underwear; the town noticed the underwear. Emperor vowed to get the weavers. 

The Emperor is an animal. Swindlers are animals. Emperor wanted to get swindlers. Child is a girl. A parade, not a procession. Story told how much money the swindlers got. The emperor angry at the end, sucks his thumb and wears full floor clothes.

Don't listen to people you Don't know well. If you Don't see the clothes Don't believe. Don't let them trick you. Don't lie. Don't suck your thumb if you are a king. Don't pay strangers. Don't be mean; never wear long john undies in parade. Don't pay gold. Don't be rough with people. Don't be a robber. Don't be stupid if you're a king. Never talk to strangers. Tell the truth.

Emperor realized he was in underwear in the parade. Talking, face to face.

The Principal's New Clothes

(Calmenson, 1989)

Principal, Two tricksters: Ivy and Moe.

(Vice Principal, smartest kindergartner)

Cartoonish, realistic, watercolor, black outlines.

Principal had one suit for every day of the month. Sometimes he changed at lunch. Two tricksters came saying we can make magic clothes - if you cant see it, you are stupid, and unfit to the job.  In the gym, vice principal, smartest student and principal cant see the cloth, but pretended to see the cloth. At assembly, every one said "Ohh, Ah" child noticed he was in underwear. Everybody passed up clothes. Mr. Bundy was still the sharpest dresser in town.

He was sharpest dresser in town. No parade / procession.  ABC boxers. Principal, not Emperor. Undershirt is on. Kindergartner yelled that he was with his underwear on not the child. People passed up clothes so he would have something on. Vice principal and best student to see the suit. Rascals had names made on clothes in the gym. Swindlers male and female. Principal worked in school. Made clothes with sewing not weaving machines. The principal gave the kid a gold star. 

Don't lie. Don't be stupid. Always be fit for a job. Don't wear ABC undies in front of kids. Don't believe lies. Don't call someone else stupid. Don't be mean. Do the right thing. Don't be tricksters, if you are smart Don't say you are stupid. If you can't see the clothes Don't believe they're there.

Talking, tricking the principal, face to face. Principal embarrassed to be in ABC boxers.
