The 4/5th grade class is an engaging, Project Work: This class takes Uni Primary to another level of sophistication with regard to "inquiry." The scientific approach of questioning, hypothesizing, data collecting, analyzing, reflecting, and disseminating a project topic is truly owned and initiated by the classroom community ( and still guided by a teacher of course). Language & Literacy: Literature Circles meet regularly to digest chapter book after chapter book. Students read challenging and enjoyable fiction and nonfiction, conversing with a community of peers guided by a teacher. Opportunities for writing in a variety of genres and for a variety of audiences while developing one's own "voice" is a cornerstone to writing. Grammar, punctuation, figurative language, and publishing skills are apart of what the 4/5th garde authors learn to do in order to express their ideas. Math: The University of Chicago Everyday Math program is the primary resource for math curriculum. Similar to our other classrooms, we draw on a variety of mathematical resources and materials to support individuals developing at a variety of ability levels. The Arts: As a Reggio-inspired school, the arts strengthen this community of learners, each developing an individual aesthetic while learning to appreciate the perspectives and opinions of others. Music, visual arts, and drama are apart of the classroom and more mature manifestations (performances) are eagerly anticipated! Science & Social Studies: Though primarily explored during project work, scientific and social studies topics are intentionally included in the curriculum. Geography, history, economics, social justice, and health for are given contextualized time as part of a growing body of content knowledge appropriate for this age group. |
