Leading Towards Justice Symposium

Join us on January 19 and 20, 2024 for the first Leading Towards Justice Symposium. Building upon the Leading Towards Justice Series, the Symposium invites scholars, practitioners, educators, and leaders to share their work and evolve our collective leadership practices of justice-seeking in education.

The LtJ Symposium asks, how do we lead towards justice within these territories? We recognize that system leaders are seeking change within institutions founded in and arranged by settler colonialism and enslavement. These are foundational structures that have harmed relations with lands, waters, and local Indigenous communities. We also recognize and appreciate how Indigenous lifeways have persisted and resisted colonial conditions. Despite educational systems having privileged individuals with titles and formal authority, leadership has been on these lands since time immemorial. We invite workshops that consider what restorative, equity-based practices mean locally, upon these territories, and how we might surface and center community-based, collective, and relational forms of leadership.

Registration

The registration fee for individual participants is $100. UW College of Education alumni are invited to bring one friend or colleague that you’d like to introduce to COE leadership programs, included in the $100 registration fee. Please check your confirmation email after registering for a discount code to share.

Current students at any school, college or university may attend the symposium at no cost. There are also “scholarship participant” options available for those that need or want this event to be lower cost, including a $35 rate for teachers and other P-12 educators (non-administrators).

Parents, families, and community members are always leading us towards justice! We welcome them to register for free or at their chosen cost.

Although we recommend pre-registering for the Symposium, registration will also be available at the event on Friday and Saturday.

Symposium Program

The Symposium includes 4 concurrent sessions with 23 workshops, in addition to an exciting keynote conversation, discussion/debrief circles, a film screening, and reception. There is a lot to choose from!
