{"id":568,"date":"2009-03-23T14:16:06","date_gmt":"2009-03-23T21:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/c\/?p=568"},"modified":"2009-03-23T14:16:06","modified_gmt":"2009-03-23T21:16:06","slug":"daily-report-day-1-monday-march-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/daily-report-day-1-monday-march-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Report &#8211; Day 1 &#8211; Monday, March 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center; font-style: italic; line-height:1.2; font-size:25px\">\u201cAt Kassel, we move from analysis to action<br \/>\n\u2014we\u2019re going public.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>Sixty representatives from six continents met today in Kassel, Germany to position doctoral education as a more powerful force for addressing the world\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Despite cold rain outside, warmth and collegiality characterized interactions between attendees, some of whom had not seen each other since the previous Forces and Forces (F+F) Worldwide Workshop, held in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertial-align:text-top; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/monday-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opening day was a time to regroup, review and renew.  Highlights included opening remarks, introductions, and initial work by three task forces, each devoted to one of these issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internationalization and inequality in doctoral education<\/li>\n<li>Diversity of students in doctoral education in an international perspective<\/li>\n<li>Promoting intellectual risk-taking under conditions of globalization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Highlights of opening remarks:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis meeting is of the highest priority,\u201d said Carol Stoel, of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)<\/a>, a workshop sponsor (via a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/c\/ff3-blogpost\/567\/\">videotaped greeting<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wholeheartedly support you,\u201d added James Wyche, also of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">NSF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting a doctorate is an opening to the world beyond the \u2018ivory tower\u2019\u201d said Annette Schmidtmann of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfg.de\/en\/dfg_profile\/index.html\">DFG<\/a>, the major German research funding organization<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour work points us toward how we can improve relationships between corporations and academia,\u201d said Andrea Frank of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stifterverband.de\/\">Stifterverband f\u00fcr die Deutsche Wissenschaft<\/a>, a workshop sponsor and philanthropic umbrella organization of about 3,000 companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very happy about this (workshop),\u201d said Markus Baumanns of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeit-stiftung.de\/\">ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius<\/a>, a German private foundation and workshop sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>An overview of the two previous Forces and Forms Workshops, held in 2005 (Seattle, Washington, USA) and 2007 (Melbourne, Australia), reminded attendees how results from both provided the platform for the Kassel workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees agreed on workshop goals to reach by March 27 at the workshop conclusion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop a set of policy recommendations<\/li>\n<li>Develop a dissemination and action plan<\/li>\n<li>Planning toward publication of a book<\/li>\n<li>Development of a global agenda on research in doctoral education<\/li>\n<li>Creation of regional research clusters led by network members<\/li>\n<li>Agreement to a new workshop format to occur possibly in 2012<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertial-align:text-top\" src=\"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/monday-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Work groups documented their motivations, concerns, and visions for workshop outcomes; here are highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cuse the network to train administrators\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cdevelop guidelines for immediate action\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201ca Kassel declaration\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat is ethnicity?  Different countries tell us very different things.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border:none\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody style=\"border:none\">\n<tr style=\"border:none\">\n<td style=\"border:none\">\n<div style=\"font-size:12px\">Random highlights of speakers\u2019 comments:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe need a closer look at the globalization of knowledge\u2026and the migration of the highly educated, and how this affects society.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe are about understanding trends, tensions, and mechanisms; we\u2019re learning to get the message across, networking, and planning\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCurrent funding structures (for doctoral education) are based on traditional models and do not support risk-taking.
