He holds a B. S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mississippi in 1957. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was the Dean of the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley from 1985 to 2000.\u00a0 During this time he worked closely with Maresi Nerad, whom he hired into the Graduate Division, on a series of research projects to measure systematically the quality and effectiveness of the graduate experience at Berkeley, with a special focus on Ph.D. recipients.\u00a0 A particularly useful new tool was the development of a comprehensive (and virtually mandatory) exit survey for all Berkeley Ph.D. graduates.\u00a0 In addition, Nerad and Cerny conducted a national PhD career path survey of six disciplines at sixty-one universities, which included evaluating the postdoctoral experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The majority of Cerny\u2019s relevant publications are contained in Nerad\u2019s CV for CIRGE.\u00a0 Two separate internet publications by him are: Remarks given at the Third National Postdoc Network Meeting, \u201cChanging the Culture of Science,\u201d see [Cerny, Starting the Ball Rolling, Postdocs, May 2, 2003]; and a Report of the DOE\/NSF Nuclear Science Advisory Committee\u2019s Subcommittee on Education, which he chaired, see [Education Nuclear Science DOE\/NSF November 2004].\u00a0 This report surveys then-current\u00a0 a) undergraduates, b) graduate students, and c) postdoctoral fellows; it also contains a national nuclear science Career Survey of Recent Ph.D.\u2019s: Five to Ten Years Later.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Joseph Cerny is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.\u00a0 He immediately joined the faculty after receiving his Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1961.
