{"id":1328,"date":"2012-10-05T20:37:57","date_gmt":"2012-10-05T20:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/?page_id=1328"},"modified":"2018-06-11T20:24:18","modified_gmt":"2018-06-11T20:24:18","slug":"phd-career-path-tracking","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/phd-career-path-tracking\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD Career Path Tracking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2063 alignleft\" title=\"bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373\" src=\"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bigstock-Career-Path-Sign-8832373-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In order to understand the quality of graduate education (and postdoctoral education), \u00a0universities and agencies need to find out what PhD recipients are doing after completing their university education and they need to investigate how career paths are linked to the quality of doctoral and postdoctoral education.<strong> CIRGE<\/strong> houses the data of the three national career path studies, <a title=\"PhD Ten Years Later\" href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/phd-career-path-tracking\/phd-holders-in-natural-sciencesengineering\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>PhDs &#8211; Ten Years Later<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (which surveyed PhDs in biochemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, English, mathematics, and political science from 64 institutions); <a title=\"PhDs in Art History\u2014Over a Decade Later\" href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/phds-in-art-history-over-a-decade-later\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Art History PhDs &#8211; A Decade Later<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (which surveyed all PhD recipients who graduated from U.S. art and architectural history programs, and <strong>\u00a0<a title=\"Social Sciences PhDs-Five+Years Out\" href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uw.edu\/cirge\/phd-holders-in-social-sciences\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Social Science PhDs &#8211; Five Years Out<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(which surveyed PhD recipients from 65 institutions in anthropology, communications, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The analysis of these data examines the transition from education to more stable employment, evaluates doctoral programs, assesses the doctoral degree\u2019s usefulness for career and life, the relationship between family and career development, and analyzes respondent recommendations for improvements in doctoral programs. An important part of CIRGE\u00a0 research focuses on doctoral program assessment from the perspective of the PhD recipients who went through the program and had several years of work experience and applying what they have learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Publications<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nerad, M.
